As the saying goes, “West Coast is the Best Coast,” and when it comes to rodeo, Redding, California sure does live up to the hype! Nestled beside the beautiful Sacramento River and amongst lush greenery, Redding sets the scene for the historic California rodeo that has championed rodeo’s past, present, and future since 1948. Celebrating 76 years of high-flying, gravity-defying action, the Redding Rodeo is back this May 15th-18th.

Inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2016, The Redding Rodeo Committee is committed to providing the best professional rodeo action while honoring Northern California’s ranching and agricultural history. The inception of the Redding Rodeo can be traced back to Redding’s very own Sheriff, John Balma. After returning home from military service in the 1940s, Balma and his cohorts wished to celebrate the community they grew up in. As a member of the sheriff’s posse and eventual Chief of Police, Balma and many other law enforcement officers worked hard to create the 6 Pac Rodeo group, which consists of 6 major rodeos in California, one of them being the Redding Rodeo!
The Redding Rodeo is your one-stop shop for PRCA rodeo action. From Bareback to Barrel Racing, this rodeo has all the events you know and love. In addition to your favorite professional rodeo events, the Redding Rodeo is giving kiddos a chance at rodeo stardom during the rodeo’s Mutton Bustin’ performances.
Wednesday, May 15th: Redding Rodeo Extreme Bull Riding
Thursday, May 16th: Redding Rodeo
Friday, May 17th: Redding Rodeo
Saturday, May 18th: Redding Rodeo
While the Redding Rodeo has made its mark in many ways, one page in the history book stands out. On May 20th, 1988, legendary bull rider Lane Frost became the first cowboy to ride the infamous bull Red Rock. As a ProRodeo Hall of Fame bull, Red Rock had yet to allow a cowboy to make it to the eight-second mark. All changed when Frost and the un-rideable beast met at the bucking shoot. As Red Rock shot from the gate, the rodeo world was in for a surprise as Frost became the first cowboy to make the eight-second ride! PRCA history was made in Redding!
Thank you to all of the sponsors. The Redding Rodeo wouldn’t be what it is today without your love and support. The major sponsors are Sierra Pacific Industries, Redding Rancheria, Blach Beverage, Pendleton Whisky, COORS, SnL Construction, and Valero. The full list of sponsors can be found here.
