For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 24, 2015) — The first of two semifinals came to a close at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Tuesday night with a happy Utah bull rider making a big statement.
Wesley Silcox from Santaquin won the second round with an 87-point ride on D&H Cattle Company’s Velvet Revolver. The 2007 world champion added a much needed $4,277 to his earnings and now will be riding for the championship on Friday night.
Silcox came into semifinals 1 at the bottom of the 10-man field with $1,141 in earnings. He finished second in the AT&T Center on Monday night earning $3,208 enough to give him a chance but he had to ride for another eight seconds Tuesday to advance to the finals.
By virtue of his first place check Silcox moved into second place in the money category with $8,625 in total earnings behind fellow Utah bull rider Joe Frost who has $10,407. Silcox won the rodeo title here in 2006 and the Xtreme Bulls in 2008. He is currently ranked 5th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings. He hasn’t qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo since 2011, something he would certainly like to change.
“I’m healthy now,” Silcox said. “That’s making a difference. Getting on these bulls here and being successful is a big confidence boost. I’ve always liked this rodeo, but it is more fun when you are winning.”
The big money winner here so far is world champion tie-down roper Tuf Cooper from Decatur, Texas. He and saddle bronc rider Wade Sundell both topped the $12,000 mark. Cooper has $12,617 while Sundell is at $12,061.
Semifinals 2 starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday with 10 more contestants vying for five spots in the final round.
