Sony Music Nashville duo Southerland first made waves with their debut single “Thing Is,” which received praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Forbes, and many more. The “twangy toe-tapper” (Billboard) was compared favorably to 90s country – a sound which resonates even more in their debut EP Boot Up, out May 28. Listen here.
The critically-acclaimed band, made up of Chris Rogers and Matt Chase, also released the music video for the EP’s title track on the same day. Rolling Stone commented of the video,
“[Southerland] depicts everyone from farmers and bartenders to soldiers and first responders in their preferred brand of footwear, making the case that although the boot style may vary from person to person, the character of the wearer likely remains the same.”
Watch the “Boot Up” music video below.
Boot Up has an undeniable authentic country sound, with Chase and Rogers co-writing all seven songs on the project. From the soaring chorus in “Dance” to the mid-tempo groove of “Little Bit Of You,” Boot Up is brimming with personality and is sure to keep fans hitting repeat all summer long.
“We could not be more proud of this EP,” shares Southerland. “When the pandemic hit, we took the opportunity to write and record music that truly tells the story of who we are as a duo. These songs are such an authentic picture into who we are and the kind of music that influenced us. The title track, ‘Boot Up,’ is a song we wrote as a tip of the hat to all the folks out there that make the world go around. It’s more than just cowboy boots, it’s about all the good folks out there ‘booting up’ in whatever they are doing.”
Everyone saw the duo’s potential in Charleston, South Carolina native Matt Chase and small-town Washington, Georgia’s Chris Rogers before they saw it themselves. Before morphing into the musical outfit now known as Southerland, the two had been playing college towns and dive bars together for three years. They met in 2016 through mutual friend Ray Fulcher during a songwriting session and their musical compatibility is what has kept the two workings and playing together ever since. They have developed, quite naturally, into a duo that relies heavily on lyrical content, while melodically blending classic and pop-country. The two create music that takes the storytelling of traditional country music and gives it a relatable, modern country feel.
