Team ropers busy at Reno Rodeo on Monday

Written by

RENO, NEV., June 22, 2015 — It was a busy day for team ropers at the Reno Rodeo on Monday, with the Bob Feist Invitational Roping (BFI) going on in the events center and first round team roping in the arena during the day.
Team ropers here compete once in the morning, then come back and rope their second steer during the performance. Their times are added together with the 12 that have the highest total time on two runs advancing to Saturday night’s championship finals.
Some of the ropers that took advantage of the opportunity to rope at the BFI and in the Reno Rodeo had great success in the outdoor arena for the 96th annual rodeo. Among those were world champions Nick Sartain and Rich Skelton. Sartain has one gold buckle in the heading and Skelton has a record eight in heeling.
They roped their first steer here in 5.1 seconds to move into second place in the first round. They loped their horses back to the events center and roped in the BFI finishing in 15th place. Then a quick break and they were at the fourth rodeo performance where they stopped the clock in 6.5 seconds.
Sartain, from Dover, Okla., and Skelton, from Llano, Texas are currently in fifth place in the overall standings and are in good shape to make it back here Saturday night. Skelton was seriously injured in an accident near his home on May 15. He was driving a tractor and was rear ended by a truck pulling a livestock trailer and a small car. The tractor tipped over on its side and ejected Skelton out of the top. He sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital in Austin, Texas. This is his first rodeo back after the injuries.
Other team ropers that moved into the overall standings after Monday night’s rodeo are seven-time world champion Jake Barnes and Junior Nogueira from Scottsdale, Ariz. They are second with a total time of 11.3 seconds. The new paring of Joel Bach and Jim Ross Cooper have a total of 11.4 seconds. Bach is from Mount Vernon, Texas, and Ross hails from Monument, N.M. Montana’s Travis Tryan and Oklahoma’s Jett Hillman are in fourth place with an 11.5.
The fifth performance begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Tickets are available at www.renorodeo.com or by calling 800-325-7328..
