An event like none other is heading to Oklahoma at the Lazy E Arena from March 2nd through March 4th. This event brings the top twenty all-around rodeo competitors to Guthrie, Oklahoma, to fight for the coveted and unique title of the 2023 Cinch Timed Event Champion. The Timed Event Championship asks competitors to compete in not just one but five events through the three-day event. The events are heading, heeling, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and steer roping, and the cowboy who comes out on top wins a purse of $100,000.
This prestigious and grueling event premiered in 1985 from the vision of EK Gaylord II, who saw a need for something that showcased the all-around cowboy who did well in many events, not just one, as was becoming popular at the time. Nicknamed the “Ironman of Pro Rodeo,” this event is grueling, to say the least. Last year’s winner, Erich Rogers from Round Rock, Arizona, recently stated,
“After all I’ve been through to be here makes this win even sweeter. The Timed Event is one of the greatest events ever. You don’t get to compete against the best 20 all-around cowboys in the world in five different events anywhere else in the world.”
The Lazy E Arena has an incredible history all on its own. It opened in 1984, just in time for the National Finals Steer Roping Finals. The originator of the arena, EK Gaylord II, provided the opportunity for the National Finals Rodeo and the Steer Roping Finals to be at the same place and at the same time to create an epic rodeo event. While this plan only worked for one year, that didn’t stop this legendary arena from becoming a place where legends visit and where legends are made. The current ownership group is committed to maintaining the Lazy E Arena as the premier western entertainment facility, with updates and renovations taking place to maintain that status.
You don’t want to miss the action at the Timed Event Championships, but also check out the Junior Ironman Championship while you’re there. The Junior Ironman features ten young guns showcasing their talents alongside the Timed Event competitors. March 2nd is packed full of entertainment. 5 pm is the first performance for the Junior Ironman Championship, followed by the Timed Event’s first performance at 7 pm. Friday, March 3rd, contains two performances for the Timed Event competitors, one at noon and the other at 7 pm, with the Junior Ironman in the middle at 5 pm. The final day, Saturday, March 4th, starts at noon with the fourth Timed Events performance. 5 pm is the third performance for the Junior Ironman, followed by the last performance of the Timed Events at 7 pm. And don’t forget the after-party every night of the event in the Gold Buckle Cantina with the Jake Adams Band. Learn more at https://lazye.com/ctec/.
