Time Marches On, But Real Country Remains: Tracy Lawrence Takes Center Stage at  Rio Round Up

There is an unbroken thread that connects a sold-out rodeo arena to the Golden Era of country music. It isn’t about flashy production or modern pop crossovers; it’s about heritage, unyielding grit, and anthems that hit as hard as an eight-second ride. For rodeo fans and competitors alike, 1990s country isn’t just a nostalgic genre; it is the official soundtrack of the Western lifestyle.

This year, Rio Round Up brings that raw, authentic energy to the iconic Penn & Teller Theater at Rio Las Vegas with the ultimate heavy hitter of the 90s boom: country legend Tracy Lawrence.

The Anthem Maker: Tracy Lawrence and the 90s Country Legacy

The 1990s redefined country music, bridging old-school storytelling with stadium-sized energy. At the absolute center of that golden decade was Tracy Lawrence. Born in Texas and raised in Arkansas, Lawrence built a career on the backbone of neotraditional country and classic honky-tonk, a movement that put steel guitars, fiddles, and real-life storytelling back on the map.

With 18 Number One hits, over 13 million albums sold, and timeless classics like “Texas Tornado,” “Time Marches On,” and “Alibis,” Lawrence didn’t just sing the songs of the era; he helped define them.

While Lawrence didn’t pull ropes in the arena as a professional rodeo athlete, his connection to the culture runs deep. Having married into the rodeo family early in his career, he spent decades side-by-side with cowboys and barrel racers, gaining a firsthand appreciation for the physical sacrifice, relentless travel, and blue-collar pride of the sport. His music carries the exact same ethos as a championship cowboy: staying true to your roots, enduring the hard hits, and always getting back in the saddle.

About the Author:

Biography:

I grew up on a Midwest farm with dirt under my fingernails and the sound of wind rustling through cornfields. My childhood was all about 4H – raising pigs and horses, learning to bake and sew, and discovering the magic of transforming a garden into jars of summer sunshine. Those years taught me the value of hard work, the thrill of seeing a project through to the end, and the simple joy of creating something beautiful. A country girl with a need for speed and a thirst for adventure. Maybe that's why I love the feeling of wind in my hair – whether I'm cruising down a dusty road on my Harley or tackling a mountain trail on my trusty mountain bike. Some of my earliest memories of rodeo are watching my father compete at small local events. That's also where my love for country music comes in – long car rides listening to 8 tracks. The lyrics and melodies always spoke to my soul. These days, you'll find me cheering on the cowboys and cowgirls at rodeos, two-stepping to my favorite bands, belting out a country tune at a concert or sharing stories and laughter with friends around a bonfire. When I'm not soaking up the country life and getting my boots dirty, I'm a nurse, caring for folks in my community. Follow along for more stories from the heart of rodeo and country life!
