Native American Culture

Harrahs Ak-Chin CasinAs the temperatures heat up, find some cool fun at The Lounge at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. The Lounge offers free concerts almost every night of the week for guests age 21 and older. Come on in for some great entertainment! Among the bands performing in July are Basketball Jones and Joey Molland’s Badfinger.  Make your night complete, and dine at The Buffet or The Range Steakhouse.

Each month, the featured cocktail at Harrah’s is only $5. It is always a good buy and tasty, too. This month, it is the FROZEN GOLDEN MARGARITA — a frozen margarita with Sauza Gold, Fat Tuesday lime sour, orange liqueur float, a salted rim, and a lime wedge for garnish. This featured cocktail is available in The Lounge and throughout the casino  floor.

Basketball Jones takes the stage on Saturday, July 15, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. This Phoenix-based band plays favorite hits with a fun disco and funk vibe. The band’s new album, “Glam Dunk,” features disco remakes of many classic rock tunes. Some of the band’s popular songs include Disco Inferno, Super Freak, Let It Whip, You Should Be Dancing, You Sexy Thing, and Love Train. Hear a new take on some rock favorites!

Joey Mulholland’s Badfinger performs on Friday, July 28, at 8 p.m. According to the band’s Facebook page, Badfinger is the most successful recording act signed to the Beatles’ label, Apple Records. Band members have interacted in various ways with each member of the Beatles, including in their solo careers. According to the Badfinger site, Paul McCartney wrote and produced Badfinger’s first single, Come & Get It. Other Badfinger members loaned backup vocals to George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass triple album set.

Badfinger’s top 10 hits include Come & Get It, No Matter What, Day After Day, Baby Blue, and Without You. Without You was also recorded by Harry Nilsson in 1972 and Mariah Carey in 1994; both versions were number-one songs.

Enjoy both of these bands and more at The Lounge, where you’ll find an intimate setting close to the stage. Concerts can also be viewed from the casino floor. Check out The Lounge calendar to see the full schedule of artists!

About the Author:

Biography:

Carolyn Sostrom is a long-time Arizona resident who loves desert sunsets, warm weather, Zumba, and the Western lifestyle.

She attended Saguaro High School in Scottsdale and then Arizona State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Similarly to the protagonist in *The Devil Wears Prada*, Carolyn moved to New York City right after college. She started working for the fashion magazine company Conde Nast but never transitioned to the dark side. After a few years, she left New York in the rearview mirror and returned to her home state, taking a reporter job at the *Apache Junction Independent*.

With over 30 years of freelance writing experience, Carolyn especially enjoys writing about community events and profiling individuals who are making a difference in their communities. She had the pleasure of interviewing a variety of cowboy personalities for an article she wrote for the *Scottsdale Independent* about the history of DC Ranch and its roots as a working ranch. Now, her Western adventures with CLN have her diving into the rugged automotive scene, exploring the trucks and rigs cowboys rely on for work, home, and play, a niche where grit meets horsepower.

She works at Raising Special Kids, a nonprofit resource center for families of children with disabilities and special healthcare needs. Carolyn also volunteers with the Autism Society of Greater Phoenix.

Carolyn believes that everyone has a story, and she loves connecting with others to hear their stories. She’s dedicated to ethical journalism and accurate reporting, which shines through in her storytelling.
