for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo
FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 30, 2015) – Rodeo fans may not know who Baylor Roche is, but if he continues to do what he has done in the steer wrestling at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, that will soon change.
Roche is a two-time College National Finals Rodeo qualifier who was competing a lot in 2012 when he broke his ankle. After surgery, he came back after that entering rodeos in the Wilderness Circuit. He also worked and saved money so he could make a run for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
He did well enough at rodeos in Utah, Idaho and Nevada to qualify for the Wilderness Circuit Finals Championships last October. He left there with the championship and qualified for the upcoming RAM National Circuit Finals.
The first round of steer wrestling was completed here on Jan. 22 where Roche tied for second with a 4.1-second run and earned $3,854. He made his second appearance in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum on Friday night and stopped the clock in 4.6 seconds. He has a total time of 8.7 and now has the overall lead, ahead of Dirk Tavenner from Rigby, Idaho who was 9.0 seconds on two runs.
“It would be awesome to win this rodeo,” Roche said. “It would be the biggest thing that has ever happened in my career and help me keep going and hopefully qualify for the Finals (Wrangler National Finals Rodeo). It’s been good for my confidence and I can’t wait for the next rodeo.”
Roche will be traveling from Fort Worth to Rapid City, S.D., then back here for the championship round on Feb. 7.
Friday afternoon was good for bull riders. Only three cowboys made a qualified ride—but all scored 82 points or better.
Casey Huckabee of Grand Saline, Texas, took the first-round lead with an 84-point ride on Big Rafter Rodeo’s Salty Dog. Another Texan, Reid Barker of Comfort, tallied 83 points on United Pro Rodeo’s Twin Towers to tie for second in the first round. Wyoming’s Clayton Savage scored 82 points on Rafter G’s Penn Transport, which put him fourth in round one.
Of those riders, only Savage was successful on Friday night. He scored 85 points on United Pro Rodeo’s Bet on Black and is at the top of the overall leaderboard with 167 points on two rides. Savage and his wife had a daughter ten months ago and that has changed his focus.
“It’s made a big difference,” he said. “I think about providing for my family now and I want what is best for them.”
Bret Stall took the lead in the second round with an 86-point ride on Friday night as well. Stall, from Detroit Lakes, Minn., was successful on the bull named Fargo from Dakota Rodeo.
The bareback riding here features three preliminary rounds of competition before the championships. Kash Wilson from Gooding, Idaho, had been in the overall lead since the first weekend, but that also changed on Friday. Tyler Nelson from Victor, Idaho, is now in first place with 238, just one point ahead of Wilson.
Competition at the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues on Saturday, Jan. 31 with performances at 10 a.m., 2 and 7:30 p.m.
