FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 31, 2015) – Matt Sherwood is a veteran team roper with two gold buckles in the heading to his credit. Quinn Kesler is a rookie who is taking advantage of the opportunity to rope behind one of the world’s best.
Sherwood, from Pima, Ariz., and Kesler from Holden, Utah, took the team roping lead in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum on Saturday by over a second with a time of 11.0 on two runs. They roped their first one in 5.4 seconds at the Saturday morning performance. They came back at the matinee and stopped the clock in 5.6.
They now are placing high in the first and second rounds of competition and have moved Texans Caleb Smidt and Mickey Gomez to second place overall with their time of 12.2 on two. The top 12 contestants in all of the events based on highest total scores and fastest total times will advance to the championship round here next Saturday.
Sherwood has been part of the championship photo here before. He won the team roping in 2008 roping with Randon Adams, the same year that he earned his second world title.
The barrel racing was fast and furious here on Saturday afternoon. The 2014 rookie of the year, Sarah Rose McDonald from Brunswick, Ga., took her horse “Bling” around the pattern in 16.42 seconds to move to the top of the leaderboard.
The 2006 world champion Mary Burger from Pauls Valley, Okla., moved into second place on Saturday night with a 16.58. Reigning world champion Fallon Taylor who lives in Whitesboro, Texas is now in third with 16.62.
Montana’s Ty Erickson is on a steer wrestling roll here. He tied for first in the first round with a 3.9-second run earning $5,346. He had his second run in the matinee performance and with his 4.6 is tied for first in the overall standings with a total of 8.5.
Chancey Larson from Manhattan, Kan., is the other man at the top of the leaderboard. He also moved to a tie for first place in the second round with a 3.9 Saturday afternoon. Both of these men are making plans to be back here in one week for the championship round.
Competition at the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues on Sunday, Feb. 1 with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
