2005 world champion shines at National Western Stock Show

Written by

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 21, 2025) — Tie-down roper Ryan Jarrett of Comanche, Okla., has had a stellar performance at the 119th edition of the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

Jarrett won the coveted gold buckle as the world champion all-around cowboy in December of 2005. He qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in the tie-down roping and steer wrestling that year. For the past several years he has focused on tie-down roping and has competed at rodeo’s championships an additional 12 times, the last in 2021.

With a family and cattle to take care of, rodeoing has changed for him in the past 20 years. This year, his wife, Shy-Anne Jarrett came to Denver with him and is competing in the women’s barrel race. She also was successful here in Bracket 5 and will advance to the Semi-Finals on Saturday in second place.

Coleman Shallbetter was the man to beat in saddle bronc riding. The Gunnison, Colorado cowboy had scores of 83 and 84.5 points in Bracket 5 to be the man at the top of the leaderboard. Shallbetter is 20 years old and has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for the past two years.

He competed in high school rodeo for his home state of Colorado and helped on his family’s ranch. He is now attending Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, and is second in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association standings. If he maintains that through May, he will qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, next June.

If he keeps riding like he did in the Denver Coliseum, Shallbetter will be adding more pro rodeos to his schedule and will have more money in his pockets as he continues his education and takes advantage of opportunities to learn in and outside of the arena.

Bracket 6 at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo starts on Wednesday with performances at 1:30 and 7 p.m.
