SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 20, 2015) — Despite riding with casts on both of his wrists, Jake Wright from Milford, Utah spurred his way to the top of the saddle bronc leader board at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo Friday night.
Wright rode J Bar J Rodeo’s horse named Tipped Off for 84 points and $2,281. This is the first round of bracket 4 at the $1.65 million rodeo which has been named the PRCA’s Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year 10 times.
One of four brothers that qualified for last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR), Wright’s injuries started there last December. He sustained a compression fracture to his back in the ninth of ten rounds in Las Vegas. He also chipped a bone in one wrist and went on to hurt the other one in an accident at his home.
The back is healed and the casts don’t seem to be slowing the three-time NFR qualifier down. His older brother Cody is a two-time world champion. His twin brother Jesse and younger brother also have won gold buckles that signify they are the world’s best. Jake has had a lot of success at the NFR and in his career finishing in the top five in the world standings the past three years.
His nephew Rusty, Cody’s son is the only Wright advancing to the semifinals so far. Rusty advanced out of bracket 2. Cody is at home in Utah recovering from injuries. Jesse didn’t earn enough money in his bracket to qualify and Spencer will be competing in the fifth and final bracket. Jake is not assured a spot in the semifinals yet, but with two more horses to ride he has a great opportunity.
The 2007 San Antonio bareback riding champion is looking good in the AT&T Center as well. Will Lowe, from Canyon, Texas, rode J Bar J’s horse named Bar Bandit for 85 points to win the first round.
The second and third rounds of bracket four will be held here on Saturday during the matinee performance at 1 p.m. and the evening performance at 7:30.
