Veterans Day is an opportunity for communities around the country to recognize those who served our country. The Ak-Chin Indian Community offers great reasons to thank its veterans – a special event on Nov. 5, dining and golf deals on Nov. 11, and free movies.

The 17th Annual Ak-Chin Indian Community Veterans Recognition Day Celebration is Saturday, November 5, starting with a fun run/walk and a 5K run. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the run/walk sets off at 9 a.m. Runners and walkers start at the Ak-Chin Service Center on Farrell Road and go to Milton “Paul” Antone Regional Park. The first 150 participants receive free T-shirts, and 5K winners will receive awards.

Stick around for a full day of fun, including speakers, entertainment, and a free barbecue. Try your hand at the horseshoe tournament; the entry fee is $20. Contact Terry Enos for information at 520-510-5674.  If spiking is more your thing, gather a team for the co-ed volleyball tournament. Entry fee is $75 per team. Contact Cecil Peters, 520-560-7814 for information.

The Ak-Chin Indian Community’s recognition of veterans does not end with this event – lots of specials are available to thank those who have served our country.

The Buffet at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino and the 347 Grill located at the UltraStar Multi-tainment Center at Ak-Chin Circle both offer free meals on Friday, November 11 to veterans with military ID.

Veterans can enjoy a free round of #miniDunes on Veterans Day at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

The #miniDunes course opens at 2 pm. and is a six-hole short course. Veterans also receive a 20 percent discount at the Arroyo Grille restaurant at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club on Friday, November 11.

The UltraStar Multi-tainment Center at Ak-Chin Circle features FREE movies for veterans starting November 10, sponsored by the Ak-Chin Indian Community. The movie lineup is:

Thursday, November 10: Stripes

Friday, November 11: Glory

Saturday, November 12: Full Metal Jacket

Sunday, November 13: Saving Private Ryan

Monday, November 14: The Hurt Locker

Movies begin at 6 p.m. nightly. Please present your military ID for a free movie.

If you are a veteran, if you know a veteran, or if you want to thank our country’s veterans, join the Ak-Chin Indian Community in celebrating those who have served and those who gave their lives for our freedom!

She attended Saguaro High School in Scottsdale and then Arizona State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Similarly to the protagonist in *The Devil Wears Prada*, Carolyn moved to New York City right after college. She started working for the fashion magazine company Conde Nast but never transitioned to the dark side. After a few years, she left New York in the rearview mirror and returned to her home state, taking a reporter job at the *Apache Junction Independent*. With over 30 years of freelance writing experience, Carolyn especially enjoys writing about community events and profiling individuals who are making a difference in their communities. She had the pleasure of interviewing a variety of cowboy personalities for an article she wrote for the *Scottsdale Independent* about the history of DC Ranch and its roots as a working ranch. Now, her Western adventures with CLN have her diving into the rugged automotive scene, exploring the trucks and rigs cowboys rely on for work, home, and play, a niche where grit meets horsepower. She works at Raising Special Kids, a nonprofit resource center for families of children with disabilities and special healthcare needs. Carolyn also volunteers with the Autism Society of Greater Phoenix. Carolyn believes that everyone has a story, and she loves connecting with others to hear their stories. She’s dedicated to ethical journalism and accurate reporting, which shines through in her storytelling.
