FWSSR Begins
On January 13, the festivities commence with the All-Western Parade downtown. The grand procession includes marching bands and equestrian groups along with horse-drawn elaborately decorated floats. All are dressed in Western attire and motorized vehicles are not allowed to enter in keeping with the tradition of the Wild West.
The rodeo coincides with the stock show and features a long line of traditional events. 2017 FWSSR champions included:
- Bareback rider Tim O’Connell from Zwingle, Iowa
- Steer wrestler Luke Branquinho from Los Alamos, California
- Team roping team Erich Rogers and Cory Petska from Arizona
- Saddle bronc rider Jake Wright from Milford, Utah
- Tie-down roper Tuf Cooper from Weatherford, Texas
- Barrel racer Fallon Taylor from Collinsville, TexasBull rider Dave Mason from Burnet, Texas
In addition to awarding Western athletes prize money, the Fort Worth Stock Show also offers scholarships to high school seniors. More than $626,000 has been awarded to during the Heifer Superintendent’s Beef Challenge and the Texas M.A.D.E. Competition.
