FORT WORTH, Texas (January 23, 2015)—Bareback rider Austin Foss continues to ride well at Will Rogers Coliseum this week. The Terrebonne, Ore., cowboy scored 81 points to take the lead in the opening round of the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo® Friday night.
J Bar J Rodeo’s bucking horse Tooke’s Pride kept Foss busy during his eight-second ride as the fast-moving black horse made tight circles to the left.
Foss, who finished as runner-up for the world championship in December at the National Finals Rodeo, also finished second in Thursday night’s Fort Worth Super Shootout® Rodeo as part of the Reno Rodeo team.
The bulls are still bucking strong in Will Rogers Coliseum as well. After just one qualified ride at the Super Shootout® Thursday night, only one cowboy rode to the eight-second buzzer in Friday night’s opening performance of the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo®.
Brock Russell of Rye, Colo., stayed aboard Rafter G Rodeo’s Speck of Lightning for 77 points and the early event lead. Russell had been one of the eight (of 42) bull riders to make a qualified ride at Wednesday night’s Bulls’ Night Out competition at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo.
Collegiate cowgirl Shelby Herrmann who competes for Tarleton State and lives in Stephenville, Texas, bested the rest of the women in barrel racing. She leads the opening round with 16.75 seconds, more than two-tenths of a second quicker than 2014 reserve world champion Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D. That’s a significant margin in an event that is determined by hundredths of a second, and a big boost for a young woman who was competing in high school rodeo just 18 months ago.
Friday’s fastest run in team roping was a 7.3-second effort by a pair of Texans, Quisto Lopez of Beeville and Justin Ambriz of Jourdonton.
None of the times in steer wrestling or tie-down roping were quick enough to wrest the first round lead from the pace set during the slack (or overflow) competition, held on Wednesday and Thursday morning before the official first performance Friday night.
Three rodeo performances are scheduled for Saturday, January 25—at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Will Rogers Coliseum.
