The History Behind Cornyval

More than sixty years ago, Helotes residents gathered to celebrate a milestone in their growing community. What began as a modest hometown event soon developed into something much larger. That original celebration would become the foundation for the Helotes Cornyval, an event that has continued to grow while preserving the same sense of community pride that started it all.

In its early years, Cornyval was held in downtown Helotes, where neighbors came together for food, music, and carnival fun. As attendance increased and the festival became more popular, it eventually moved to the larger grounds on Leslie Road. There, it expanded into the major regional attraction it is today. Though the event has grown tremendously over the decades, it still carries the same welcoming spirit that made it special in the beginning. Families who attended years ago now bring children and grandchildren of their own, creating a tradition that spans generations.

The Rise of the Helotes PRCA Rodeo

As Cornyval continued to evolve, rodeo was added to the weekend celebration, creating the perfect blend of festival excitement and Texas heritage. What once began in a smaller arena has transformed into a respected PRCA Rodeo that now draws competitors and fans from across the region. The Helotes PRCA Rodeo has become one of the weekend’s signature attractions, offering thrilling performances that showcase courage, athleticism, and the timeless traditions of western competition. Each night inside the arena delivers the kind of excitement that keeps crowds on their feet from start to finish.

Three Nights of High-Energy Rodeo Action

From Thursday through Saturday, rodeo fans can expect some of the most exciting events in the sport. Bull riding always delivers edge-of-your-seat drama as riders attempt to last eight seconds atop powerful bulls. Bareback riding and saddle bronc riding showcase raw strength, control, and technique, while steer wrestling and team roping highlight speed and precision.

Women’s barrel racing brings fast-paced action and incredible horsemanship as riders race against the clock. Tie-down roping and breakaway roping continue the tradition of skill-based western events that require timing and flawless execution.

For younger guests, mutton bustin’ remains one of the most entertaining moments of the night as young riders hold on tight and steal the hearts of the crowd.

A Carnival Experience for All Ages

Beyond the rodeo arena, Cornyval offers a full festival experience designed for every age group. The carnival midway lights up the night sky with rides ranging from family favorites to high-thrill attractions. Games line the pathways, offering chances to win prizes and create memories that last long after the weekend ends.

Children enjoy the excitement of rides and treats, while adults appreciate the festive energy, music, and chance to relax with friends. Everywhere guests turn, there is something happening, from laughter on the midway to music filling the grounds.

About the Author:

Biography:

I grew up in Reno, Nevada which often gets confused as a mini Las Vegas. But Reno has so much more than casinos. I grew up branding cattle, hunting with my dad, camping, playing sports, exploring the hills and so on. I found my love for writing early in life and I always had a journal I was filling up. I also found myself diving head first into photography which led me to volunteer for the rodeo I went to every year since birth, the Reno Rodeo. I now write in the Reno Rodeo Magazine and take photos of the rodeo for another committee. My love for country goes back to the early days with my dad floating on a boat fishing listening to old country (90’s or older) and some classic rock n’ roll. I have expanded my passions of writing and photography worldwide, having traveled to the Safaris in Africa, crumbling castles in Scotland, pubs in Germany to the snowy mountain tops of the Swiss Alps; like Ian Munsick, “I see country everywhere.” You can find me now taking pictures of sports or driving around taking pictures of yet another cow. They are too cute not to. It’s guaranteed to find me living my best life. Life is short, so live vibrantly!
