Spotlight: Saddle Bronc Riding – A Legacy of Skill
Saddle bronc riding is a cornerstone of rodeo, with roots tracing back to the days of ranching. Imagine breaking wild horses for work β that’s where this event began. Today, it’s a display of refined skill and artistry.
How it’s scored:
- Riders are judged on their spurring technique, rhythm, and control.
- The bronc is also scored on its bucking ability and difficulty.
- Judges award points from 1 to 25 for both the rider and the horse, for a potential total of 100 points.
- The rider must keep one hand free, and spur the horse in a rhythmic motion.
- The rider must complete an 8 second ride.
It’s a dance of man and beast, a testament to the enduring spirit of the West.
