Payson Pro Rodeo 2015

Written by

The rodeo traces back to the mid-19th Century. It’s said that a Colorado cowboy got into a little debate over who could out-cowboy the other. We like to imagine this happened in the vicinity of a bar. But it might very well have been outside a stable or over breakfast. Wherever, it led to a group of boys hitting the dirt in front of an audience to prove who was tops in ranching.
The Payson Pro Rodeo, also known as, as the “World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo,” is one that embraces what cowboys and cowgirls love doing most. All while keeping that tradition burning for sport, adventure and family fun.
The PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) partnered with the likes of Arizona favorites like Safeway and McDonald’s. The Cowboy Lifestyle Network will be in attendance this weekend capturing the best moments with Hollywood’s Productions, Inc. Coors Light RV. The Payson Pro-Rodeo Committee puts together a show that brings in thousands throughout the weekend, from Payson and beyond, to support local charities and to see the best of the best.
The Payson Pro Rodeo is the brainchild of “Arizona Charlie” Meadows and John Chilson. The idea grew out of pride and competition. Who was the best cowboy at pitching a silver dollar? Which cowgirl could outdo the other in bronc riding or roping? Which cowboy or cowgirl should bow to the other in horse racing? In August of 1884, we found out when a bunch of folks got together in Mid-Town Pasture. It was the first Payson Pro Rodeo. Over time, this August rodeo would grow throughout time, becoming as famous for bronc busting as for foot races and greased pig contests.
