The spirit of the Old West returns to Prescott this summer as the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo celebrates its 139th year from June 29 through July 5, 2026. Since 1888, the World’s Oldest Rodeo has drawn top rodeo athletes and thousands of spectators to Arizona’s Mile High City for a week of thrilling competition, patriotic celebrations, and Western tradition. With this year coinciding with America’s 250th birthday, the 2026 Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo promises an unforgettable experience for visitors and locals alike.

139 Historic Years
July 4, 1888, became the birthday of professional rodeo when a group of Prescott, Arizona, merchants and professional businessmen organized the first formalized “cowboy tournament” and offered cash prizes. A cowboy named Juan Leivas walked off with rodeo’s first professional title and was documented in the subsequent edition of the Arizona Journal-Miner. These “Cowboy Contests” continued and were planned, promoted, and carried out by a committee of local merchants.
In 2008, the Prescott Frontier Days, Inc. Committee was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado as one of only sixteen rodeos ever to have this honor bestowed upon them. This iconic event, still held during the bustling Fourth of July week, is a cornerstone of Prescott’s summer calendar and a hotspot for rodeo contestants during Cowboy Christmas.

America’s 250th Birthday Celebration
The 2026 theme, “Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom,” honors America’s Semiquincentennial and reflects the enduring spirit of independence, resilience, and unity that defines both the nation and the West. At the World’s Oldest Rodeo, the theme pays tribute to generations of cowboys, cowgirls, and communities whose grit and determination continue to shape the legacy of rodeo today.
