Legends of the Old West Podcast are excited to introduce the first episode in their new season, Red Cloud’s War: The Road to Sand Creek.   As the United States expanded westward across the high plains in the 1840s and 1850s, its citizens began the slow destruction of the hunting grounds of the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho. The tribes attacked travelers from Kansas to Montana in response.

But the tribes refused to take large-scale action against the white travelers, whom they saw as invaders until a cavalry unit in Colorado Territory killed 230 people in the Sand Creek Massacre. After that event, the warriors of the northern plains united behind a single leader for the first time in history, the great Oglala war chief, Red Cloud.
