Redding Rodeo History

In 1949, Shasta County Sherriff John Balma had the brilliant idea to host a rodeo in Redding, after an amateur rodeo in Anderson had great success. Balma made major contributions to rodeo after starting this event, as well. Balma helped form what is now known as the SixPac Rodeo group, which consists of the six major rodeos in the state of California; and he served as the SixPac president for many years.

Redding Rodeo has made history on multiple occasions and continues to be one of the premier rodeos in California and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. On May 20, 1988, Redding Rodeo witnessed Lane Frost become the first cowboy to ride the unrideable bull, Red Rock, as the third stop of the Challenge of Champions event. In 2013, the event had the honor of hosting the inaugural Wrangler Champions Challenge; and as a long-standing member of the Wrangler Million Dollar Silver Tour, the event was selected to be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2016. What began as a one-day rodeo and one-night dance has grown to include four days of professional rodeo, the Redding Rodeo Steak Feed and Dance, and many other auxiliary events.

Special Events

In addition to the action-packed nights of rodeo competition, there will be a number of events throughout the week to keep you busy.

The annual Steak Feed and Dance, to be held Saturday, May 14, from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., will kick off the 2022 Redding Rodeo with good food, good music, and good friends. The event will serve hundreds of guests a BBQ steak, cowboy beans, a baked potato, salad, bread, and refreshing beverages before allowing them to dance the night away.

At the Steak Feed and Dance, 150 children will get to compete in mutton busting. 48 kids from the 150 will be randomly drawn to compete in one of the four rodeo performances later in the week. Registration for Mutton Busting opens on April 1st. Please follow Redding Rodeo on Facebook and Instagram, or check back on their website for updates. The application will be done online.

Originally from Earth, Texas, a small town in the Texas panhandle, I was raised around rodeo, agriculture, and the western lifestyle. With a degree from Texas A&M University, I have found a passion for promoting the lifestyle that made me who I am today. I am an experienced writer, marketer, and event professional with a strong desire to share the stories of those in our industry. When I’m not busy seeking out ways to promote the western way of life, I enjoy following those I care about around to rodeos, hunting, and going on runs with my blue-eyed, blue-merle Australian Shepherd.
