Few sports are as dangerous or heart-pounding exciting as the sport of bull riding. The Southern Extreme Bull Riding Association, often referred to as SEBRA, is dedicated to the mission of expanding interest in this sport and encouraging younger cowboys to participate and consider a professional career in the art of riding a bull into the history books of professional championships.
PBR Roots
SEBRA has its roots in another major organization dedicated to enhancing the status of those who ride bulls professionally and the fans that follow them, PBR, Professional Bull Riders. Back in 1994, PBR founder Jerome Davis decided it was time to develop a way to encourage more young cowboys to discover the exciting and special world of professional bull riding. He founded SEBRA right in the backyard of his own North Carolina hometown as an easy way to introduce young men in getting a start in this rapidly growing professional sport.
Steady Growth
When Jerome Davis returned his focus back to PBR, the reins at SEBRA were turned over to the very capable hands of its current president, Chan Canter. Since 2009, Carter has been instrumental in helping SEBRA grow from an organization which sponsored some 150 professional bull riding competitive regional events to more than 400 well attended sporting events happening in areas across the country. In fact, in the decade since its founding, SEBRA has become the largest organization in North America dedicated to the sport of skillfully riding bulls in competitive events for cash, prizes and the right to advance into PBR sponsored international competitive events.
Attracting New Bull Riders
SEBRA has remained headquartered in Archdale, North Carolina since its founding. It continues its mission to help encourage the development of a new generation of riders, breeders and producers of bulls who are groomed to be ridden in competition events.
Its members invest in the type of small stock contractors and producers who provide livestock for entry-level events that tend to attract both fans and riders who may be new to the sport but who are soon addicted to the thrills, chills, challenges and ongoing excitement. Among the PBR riders who got their start through SEBRA are fan favorites Billy Robinson, Brian Carter and J.B. Mauney.
National Finals
There’s no better introduction to professional bull riding than attending the National SEBRA Finals in Murphreesboro, TN, January 23 and 24, 2015 to see some exciting and talented young cowboys in action. Tickets are available online here.
