Where it All Began

With humble beginnings dating back to the 1800s, the Greeley Stampede has grown into a world-renowned celebration of Western heritage, now drawing more than 250,000 eager participants year after year. Originally dubbed the Greeley Spud Rodeo in 1922, the event featured spectacles like Model T racing, bronc riding, and even a good old-fashioned pie-eating contest. As its popularity soared, it was officially rebranded as the Greeley Independence Stampede in 1972, evolving into a dynamic festival complete with Fourth of July celebrations, electrifying concerts, demolition derbies, western art shows, and so much more. Today, this beloved tradition remains an unmissable summer highlight for locals and visitors alike.

“To celebrate our nation’s independence, preserve our western heritage, and strengthen our community.”
