We’re counting down the days to an exciting new tradition in the heart of Arizona’s Rim Country: the inaugural B.U.C.K.L.E. Festival & Northern Gila County Fair! Set for October 1–3, the town of Payson will come alive with three days of music, rodeo, agriculture, and western tradition. The festival brings together professional bull riding, live music, youth livestock exhibitions, a junior livestock auction, family activities, and some of Arizona’s longest-standing western traditions. Bull Riding Takes Center Stage
For fans of western sports, one of the weekend’s biggest draws will be Cowboy Lifestyle Network Professional Bull Riding, bringing elite bull riding to Payson. The sport offers no shortage of action, but professional bull riding is about more than eight seconds. It demands strength, balance, timing, and an ability to respond to an unpredictable animal in real time.
At the B.U.C.K.L.E. Festival, spectators will have the opportunity to experience that level of competition up close as some of the sport’s top athletes take on some of its toughest challenges. The bull riding adds another layer to a festival already rooted in western culture, giving visitors a chance to see one of the traditions that continues to define the modern West.

A Weekend Built Around Live Music
Music is another major part of the B.U.C.K.L.E. experience, with a lineup that reflects the range of sounds that have long been part of Western and country culture.
The festival opens Thursday evening, October 1, with Rim Country at 7:30 p.m. The group brings together seasoned musicians with decades of performance and touring experience, drawing from traditional country, Western swing, and Americana.
Friday night continues with Moonshine Mafia at 8 p.m. Known for their dynamic performances and crowd-focused energy, the band blends familiar country favorites with a modern edge, creating a set that moves easily between honky-tonk tradition and Southern rock attitude.
A full day of music Saturday rounds out the event. Western Fusion Band takes the stage at 2:30 p.m., while Kristen Merlin headlines Saturday evening at 8 p.m. With a repertoire that spans familiar favorites and crowd-pleasing originals, Western Fusion Band brings a polished, high-energy performance to every stage.
Merlin brings a different dimension to the festival lineup. A nationally recognized artist and fourth-place finalist on NBC’s The Voice, she blends country, pop, and rock with an emphasis on storytelling and authenticity. Over more than 15 years as a performer and songwriter, Merlin has built a career defined by her own sound and has shared stages with artists including Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, and Sugarland.
The Fiddle Championship Meets the Main Stage
Saturday’s music lineup also creates a unique connection to one of Arizona’s most enduring musical traditions: The Arizona State Fiddle Championship. For more than five decades, the Arizona State Fiddle Championship has celebrated some of the state’s finest fiddlers and helped preserve a musical tradition deeply connected to Arizona’s western heritage.
This year, the championship will be hosted at Mazatzal Casino on Saturday, October 3. But the competition won’t end there. The two finalists will move to the main festival stage for one final showdown during the evening’s headline concert. The result will be a rare meeting of generations and styles, bringing one of Arizona’s longest-running musical traditions directly into the festival’s contemporary live entertainment lineup.
It is exactly the kind of crossover the B.U.C.K.L.E. Festival is built to create: honoring where western culture comes from while giving it a place on today’s biggest stages.
Where Hard Work Meets Tradition
The Northern Gila County Fair brings another essential piece of the weekend into focus: agriculture and the young people working to carry it forward. The Northern Gila County Fair Livestock Show and Auction highlights months of dedication from local youth. Behind every animal in the show ring are early mornings, late nights, and countless hours spent feeding, exercising, grooming, and monitoring the health of their projects.
Exhibitors present market beef, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits, and other livestock, while judges evaluate the quality and soundness of each project alongside the exhibitor’s knowledge and ability to present their animal. The experience extends well beyond the show ring. Through their livestock projects, young exhibitors develop responsibility, time management, leadership, financial stewardship, and an understanding of what it takes to see a long-term commitment through.
More Than a Livestock Auction
The Junior Livestock Auction is one of the fair’s most meaningful traditions because it gives the community a direct opportunity to support these young exhibitors. When buyers participate, they are investing in more than an animal. Auction proceeds can help exhibitors purchase future projects, offset feed and care expenses, continue their agricultural education, and pursue opportunities in agriculture and beyond.
For the families and young people involved, the auction represents the culmination of months of work. For the community, it is an opportunity to recognize that effort and invest in the next generation.
A New Western Tradition in Payson
Alongside the bull riding, concerts and livestock events, visitors can explore western vendors, cultural demonstrations, food, family activities, ranch rodeos, mutton bustin’ championships, craft exhibits, and a Kids Rodeo designed to introduce younger generations to the sport and traditions of the West.
Mazatzal Casino will also serve as a host venue throughout the weekend, offering dining, entertainment, and hospitality while connecting visitors with activities throughout the community.
At its core, B.U.C.K.L.E. stands for Bull Riding, Unity, Culture, Kids Rodeo, Live Entertainment, and Experience, but the inaugural festival is ultimately about bringing all of those elements together in one place. It is a celebration of Payson’s western roots, the people preserving its traditions, and the next generation finding their own place within them.
