An Annual Western Celebration

Established in 1934, Ogden Pioneer Days was created to celebrate Ogden’s heritage and help the city weather the hardships of the Great Depression. Mayor Harman Peery envisioned a western-themed festival that would attract visitors, boost the local economy, and strengthen community spirit.

His ambitions were lofty. Invitations went out to figures such as President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Hollywood stars Abbott and Costello, the latter of whom attended. Nearly a century later, Ogden Pioneer Days has grown into one of the nation’s premier rodeo celebrations, fulfilling and surpassing Peery’s vision.

While the Days of ’47 commemorates the arrival of Mormon pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley, Ogden Pioneer Days celebrates Ogden’s own unique history. Though the city bears the name of Peter Skene Ogden, it was fur trader Miles Goodyear who established Fort Buenaventura in 1845, creating Utah’s first permanent non-Indigenous settlement and laying the foundation for what would become Junction City.

Today, Ogden Pioneer Days continues to honor that legacy, bringing the community together while celebrating the people, places, and traditions that shaped Ogden.

“We’ve increased our payout, we pay really close attention to the stock that’s provided, and just will continue our legacy in hospitality,” says Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo Director Rick Davis. “We always try, each year, to do something a little bigger and better to not only serve the contestants, but also serve the community. We’re just going to continue to do that and grow year by year.”
